• World Series time change clears way for Obama ad

  NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Barack Obama might have the power to move the World Series by a few minutes.

  To accommodate the half-hour October 29 time buy by the Obama campaign, Major League Baseball has agreed to move the s

  tart time of World Series Game 6 by about 15 minutes, from about 8:20 p.m. ET to 8:35 p.m.

  "Fox will accommodate Senator Obama's desire to communicate with voters in this longform format," Fox Sports said in a statement. "We are pleased that Major League Baseball has agreed to delay the first pitch of World Series Game 6 for a few minutes in order for Fox to carry his program on October 29. If requested, the network would be willing to make similar time available to Senator McCain's campaign."

  Along with CBS and NBC, Fox was approached by the Obama campaign last week to purchase the 8-8:30 p.m. time slot October 29. If a Game 6 is needed, Fox is obligated to carry the game. That prevented the network from agreeing outright to carry the commercial, which was cleared by CBS and NBC last Thursday.

  The blessing from MLB clears the way for Fox to air the promo and collect upward of $1 million in ad revenue for the half hour, more than what either CBS or NBC was charging.

  While a big network ad buy from a presidential candidate is rare, it's not unprecedented for a network and sports league to move the start time of a sports event to accommodate a political broadcast. In early September, the National Football League moved up the kickoff time of the opening-night game -- which aired on NBC -- to 7 p.m. to make sure that the game would be over before Sen. John McCain stepped up to the podium to accept the nomination of the Republican party during its national convention.

• "Sex Change" cuts deep beneath surface

  LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - As you might imagine, "Sex Change Hospital" is not for the squeamish.

  The WEtv entry, which premiered Tuesday, details the sexual reassignment surgeries (to use the latest PC term) o

  f several patients in all of the multifaceted procedure's bloody glory. And bloody it is.

  The messiness isn't really the point, of course. The series of six documentary hours -- originally released some 18 months ago in the UK -- follows the real-life patients as they beat a path from across the country and around the world to the mining town of Trinidad, Colorado (population: 10,000), the unlikely sex change capital of our planet because of the work of Dr. Marci Bowers. Bowers is a living example of the work she does at her clinic, having previously been Dr. Mark Bowers. The transgender doc provides the candor and charisma that gives "Sex Change Hospital" its quirky power.

  Each episode supplies a self-contained journey of two people who opt to have the radical surgery, taking us along as they endure the final step in their gender transitioning. We learn all of their reasons for doing this (trapped in the wrong body, never felt quite right, etc.) and the accompanying observations of Bowers, who performs more than 100 of these procedures each year on patients ranging from housewives to businessmen to construction workers to office managers.

  The people in the opener who remove the veil from their lives for the camera are almost shockingly open, which is no accident considering the program's pedigree. It comes from the World of Wonder team of Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, who have become something of the grand gurus of broad-minded content. Their past projects include the likes of "Inside Deep Throat," "The Joy of Cleavage" and "Secrets of the Sexually Satisfied Woman" as well as acclaimed docs about Tammy Faye Meisner and Anna Nicole Smith.

  Probably the most intriguing aspect of "Sex Change Hospital," however, is the sheer visual nature of it that smacks us in the face. Somehow, we never really think about the fact that this is major, messy surgery -- perhaps imagining that the genitalia are magically, cleanly altered, and that's that. The hard-core reality underscores the full sacrifice, both medical and psychological.

• Life won't change, insists Indian Booker winner

  LONDON (AFP) - Indian author Aravind Adiga insisted on Wednesday that winning the 2008 Booker Prize with his first novel will not change his life -- adding that he had already nearly finished a second book.

  ord-educated writer beat five other authors from the Commonwealth or Republic of Ireland to win the prize, one of the literary world's most prestigious awards, for "The White Tiger."

  Along with the 50,000-pound prize, his novel is all but guaranteed a worldwide readership and a spike in sales, but Adiga is certain that his life will not change.

  "It won't change much, because I live in Mumbai, and I'm going back there day after tomorrow, and life in Mumbai has a way of reminding you that writers are not particularly important," he told BBC Radio.

  "It won't mean anything to my neighbours, they won't know about this. Life will continue."

  Of his future literary efforts, he said: "India just teems with untold stories, and no one who is alive to the poetry, the anger and the intelligence of Indian society will ever run out of stories to write."

  "I do want to write about people who haven't been written about, and there's a lot of them in India still."

  Asked about writing his next book, he said he didn't "have to sit down to write it, it's almost done".

  He declined to give details on the subject of the upcoming book.

  Chairman of the judges Michael Portillo said the originality of "The White Tiger" in showing "the dark side of India" had set it apart from the others.

  "My criteria were 'does it knock my socks off?', and this one did," he said.

  Adiga was one of two Indian writers nominated for the award, alongside Amitav Ghosh for "Sea of Poppies."

  The other shortlisted authors were Australia's Steve Toltz, with "A Fraction of the Whole", Irishman Sebastian Barry for "The Secret Scripture", and British writers Linda Grant and Philip Hensher for "The Clothes on Their Backs" and "The Northern Clemency" respectively.

  "The White Tiger" follows Balram Halwai, the son of a rickshaw puller who dreams of better things than life as teashop worker and driver.

  But when he finally makes it to the bright lights of New Delhi, he is caught between his loyalty to his family and his desire to better himself.

  "This has been always the story of a man's quest for freedom, that's fundamentally how I've seen it," Adiga said, describing the novel to the broadcaster.

  "It's a story that's set in today's India, and revolves around the great divide between those Indians who have made it and those who have not.

  Adiga, who was born in Madras in October 1974 and now lives in Mumbai, is the fourth Indian-born author to win the Booker Prize since it was set up in 1969, joining compatriots Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy and Kiran Desai.

  His book is the ninth winning novel to take its inspiration from India or Indian identity.

  Adiga is also only the third debut novelist to win after DBC Pierre in 2003, for "Vernon God Little", and Roy in 1997 for "The God of Small Things."

• Mickey Rourke's choice: change or blow brains out

  NEW YORK (Reuters) - Troubled Hollywood outsider Mickey Rourke said he had a tough choice to make to get his life back on track -- change or "blow your ... brains out."

  After 15 years in the acting wilderness, Rourke

  has sealed his comeback and has Hollywood talking Oscar with a critically acclaimed performance as a lonely, washed out professional athlete in director Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler," which won the 2008 Venice film festival top prize.

  Rourke, 52, starred in 1980s hits "9-1/2 Weeks" and "Angel Heart," but developed a reputation for being difficult and volatile on set and had numerous brushes with the law.

  "If I knew 15 years ago that it would take me 15 years to get back in the saddle and work again because of the way I handled things, I really would have handled things differently," he told a news conference following a screening of "The Wrestler" at the New York Film Festival.

  "I didn't want to change until I lost everything and then I realized 'man, you better change or you better just blow your ... brains out. Either you change and you move on with life or you're just a piece of (excrement)'," he said.

  The trials of his character Randy "The Ram" Robinson parallels Rourke's troubled private life and checkered professional past, and the actor said the physically and emotionally challenging performance is the best he has done.

  "I'm doing things differently this time around, understanding what it is to be professional, be responsible, to be consistent -- those were things that weren't in my vocabulary back then," he said.

  "I can honestly say ("The Wrestler") is the best movie I ever made and the hardest movie I've ever made, and I was so God damn thankful the day we were done with it," he said. "I'm no spring chicken and this would be hard for a 20 year-old to do."

  Rourke, who appeared at the news conference a little disheveled, wearing sunglasses and holding a cigar, trained two hours-a-day with professional wrestlers for the part, a task complicated by the fact that he is a trained boxer.

  "I had a newfound respect for this as a sport as far as it being entertainment, because these guys really lay their asses on the line and get hurt," he said. "I got hurt more in the three months doing wrestling that I did in 16 years boxing."

  "The Wrestler," which also stars Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood, is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 19.

  ot; -- encompassed by words such as "obamamentum," "obamabot," "obamacize," "obamarama" and "obamanation" -- has been the second-most-used catchphrase on U.S. television this past year, topped only by No. 1 word "Beijing" referencing the recent Olympics, according to a study from the Global Language Monitor released on Tuesday.

  The Beijing Olympics in August also ushered in Phelpsian -- the No. 5 "teleword" -- coined to describe American swimmer Michael Phelps' feat of winning eight gold medals in a single Olympics, the Global Language Monitor said.

  Phelps helped boost TV audiences for the Olympics to record figures, including the 31 million people who tuned in on Aug 16 to watch him clinch his 8th gold medal at the Beijing Games.

  "This year, two events dominated television -- the Beijing Olympics and the U.S. presidential elections, " said Paul Payack, president of the Texas-based Global Language Monitor which tracks the latest trends in word usage.

  The survey measures words used starting in fall 2007 and running to late spring 2008, and is released just as the major broadcast networks are launching their 2008/2009 schedule.

  Other popular words and phrases among the top telewords of 2008 were the cliche used frequently by sportsmen and women, "It is what it is" at No. 3; "third screen" at No. 6, as in watching TV on a mobile phone; and No. 7 "vincible" applied to the upset of the seemingly invincible New England Patriots by the New York Giants in the 2008 Superbowl.
